Working in the UK

There is a huge range of opportunities to work in the UK. When you do get a job you will have to find out the sorts of taxes you need to pay and tell the tax authorities what you are up to.

One of the more popular ways of finding a job is via an employment agency, which allows you to either find a short-term job as a temporary worker while you look for something more permanent or should be able to help you find permanent employment.

If you fall ill or have an accident during your time in the UK, you may find our information about how to obtain free healthcare useful.

It's very important to have an idea of how much money you're likely to spend on accommodation, food, transport and going out in the UK. Our cost of living page should be able to provide you with a rough idea of your day-to-day expenses.

Are you travelling to England to seek work?  Be prepared before you go.

Charities are reporting that Central and Eastern European nationals who are unprepared for living and working in the UK can become homeless or face other difficulties.  They advise that people coming to the UK should:

• organise accommodation and/or a job in advance of their departure
• be prepared to support themselves financially while they seek work, a process which may take several weeks
• recognise that their eligibility for social benefits, housing and healthcare is likely to be very limited, especially if they are not in work

Homeless Link has published an advice sheet for people seeking work in England.

The UK Communities and Local Government Department has supported the charity Homeless Link to develop an Action Plan on Reducing Rough Sleeping among Central and Eastern European Migrants in London. For more information on the Action Plan and to download the publication in full go to the Homeless Link website.
